How a Stepper Motor Works (The Motor That Never Loses Count)
A stepper motor turns in exact, repeatable steps without any sensor telling it where it is. This video opens one up and shows why: the rotor teeth are pulled from pole to pole, and counting pulses is the same as counting position.
We start with a simple six-pole teaching model (30° steps, half-stepping to 15°), then show the real motor: two 50-tooth cups offset by half a tooth, giving the familiar 1.8° step.
In this video
- Why the rotor steps opposite to the energising order
- Full steps and half steps
- Where the 1.8° of a real motor comes from
- Why a stepper never loses count, until it does
