How an Inductor Works (The Coil That Fights Every Change in Current)
A coil resists any change in the current through it. Switch it on and the current ramps up instead of jumping; switch it off and the coil fights back with a voltage spike that can destroy a transistor. That is inductance.
The video shows the stored field energy, the ramp, the flyback spike, and why a diode across the coil is standard practice.
In this video
- Why current through a coil can't change instantly
- Energy stored in the magnetic field
- The flyback spike and the freewheeling diode
- Inductance in motors, relays and converters
