Lenz's Law: Why Nature Fights Every Change in Magnetism

Drop a magnet through a copper tube and it falls in slow motion. The tube is not magnetic. The falling magnet induces currents in the copper, and those currents make a field that opposes the motion. That is Lenz's law.

The video shows the direction rule, why the opposition is never strong enough to stop the motion completely, and where the effect is used.

In this video

  • Induced current opposes the change that made it
  • The copper-tube magnet drop
  • Why it can slow but never reverse the motion
  • Brakes, dampers and induction cooking
