How a Planetary Gearbox Works (Three Ways to Use One Gear Set)
A sun gear, three planets, a ring and a carrier: a planetary gearbox packs a large ratio into a small, coaxial package and shares the load across several teeth at once. It's inside cordless drills, electric cars and wind turbines.
The video shows how holding a different member gives a different ratio, how the ratio is computed from tooth counts, and why the load sharing matters.
In this video
- Sun, planets, ring and carrier
- Hold the ring, the sun or the carrier: three ratios
- Computing the ratio from tooth counts
